2022 Pharmacy Legislative Day

Target Audience
Pharmacists

Description
Welcome!
We are very excited about our day at the General Assembly this May 25th. Attendees will be playing an important role in advancing the practice of pharmacy in North Carolina. Participants will:

  • Demonstrate to policy makers that pharmacists are active and knowledgeable about policy related to their profession.
  • Establish or further foster relationships with your legislators or legislative leadership.
  • Support our profession's legislative agenda as it works its way through the process.
  • Have fun and find the day interesting and informative.

Below are some answers to questions you might have about the day.

How will the day proceed?

  • If the weather is nice, Attendees should plan to arrive between 9:00am and 9:45am. Upon arrival, please check in with an NCAP staff member. After you are checked in, you will then proceed inside, through security, and gather with others in the appointed "quad." At approximately 9:45am some last minute instructions will be provided to the group.
  • In the event of rain or if you arrive after 9:45am, enter the legislative building, clear security, and then proceed to the quad to the right of security. There will be NCAP staff available there to greet you, answer questions and get you to the right place.
  • Meetings with legislators will occur from 10:15am to 3:00pm or so. You are welcome to stay for the whole or any part of the day.

How will I know where to go during the day?

  • Your lobbyists Debra Conrad and Tony Solari and NCAP leadership will help you in getting to your legislators' offices. You will not be left to fend for yourself!

How will I know about my meetings?

  • Your information provided in registration for the event will be used to help NCAP prepare for the day. Appointments with key legislative leaders are posted at the bottom of this webpage. You are encouraged to participate in one or more of these appointments. NCAP will not be making appointments with members' individual legislators, instead attendees will, throughout the day, drop by their legislators' offices. In the event that your legislator will not be available to speak to you on this day, please take the time to talk with their administrative aide and leave behind NCAP provided materials. NCAP staff will assist you in finding the location(s) for your meetings. If NCAP receives updates or cancellations, we will post the information as quickly as we can.

What will I say?

  • You will be provided with talking points prior to your visits. The talking points will focus on passing our legislative agenda and concerns that we as pharmacist and pharmacy technicians have about policy related to the profession. There is no need to be nervous! Legislators want to hear from you, and you will find them to be very attentive. Just be yourself and you will be very effective. Talk about why you went into pharmacy, where you practice, some of the challenges you face in your daily work, and why the issues that NCAP and you are advocating for are so important to North Carolinians and their health.

How many meetings will I have?

  • The number of meetings you have will depend on how long you can stay and the availability of your individual legislators. During the day, we plan to have meetings with key legislative leaders, and hopefully with Speaker Moore and President Pro-Tem of the Senate, Phil Berger. We will be scheduling meetings, but given hectic legislative schedules some meetings may overlap, get moved around, or cancelled. We will do our best to follow through and ensure that each Pharmacy Legislative Day attendee gets to participate in one or more meetings.

Where should I park?

  • There are several lots around the legislative complex. One of the most convenient is the lot on Salisbury Street that is right across from the Legislative Office Building. It is a pay lot, but easy to get into and out of. This lot is named "Deck 75 Visitor Lot 2", and the entrance is right before you get to the Department of Insurance on the corner of Salisbury and Lane Streets. From there it is a one block walk to the front of the legislative building on Jones Street. Here is a link to a map showing the location of this lot: https://goo.gl/maps/JmAuPEyCR2rcTMPSA

Will there be information provided in advance of the day?

  • Yes! NCAP will have talking points and other information posted on this webpage by no later than May 23rd. NCAP is also hosting a continuing education webinar Sunday May 15th at 6pm on our legislative agenda. If you miss(ed) the webinar, we will post a link to the recording on this webpage.
